THE HANGOVER Hangs on at the Top of the Box Office

Todd Phillips’ R-rated hit comedy The Hangover topped the North American box office for a second consecutive week with $33.4 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The Hangover successfully fought off this week’s new releases, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 and Imagine That, lifting its domestic total to a solid $105.3 million. Bradley Cooper, Ed Helm and Zach Galifianakis star as three guys who lose their best friend on a night out in Vegas.

Tony Scott’s latest thriller, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, only made it to No. 3, earning $25 million from sales at 3,074 locations. Denzel Washington plays a New York City subway dispatcher who’s pulled into the middle of the hijacking of one of his trains. John Travolta (above) co-stars.

Eddie Murphy in Imagine That

 Imagine That, the weekend’s second wide release, debuted in sixth place with only $5.7 million. Playing at 3,008 locations, the film stars Eddie Murphy as a busy financial executive who finds the key to his success in his daughter’s imaginary world.

Meanwhile, Pixar’s Up held on tight to the No. 2 spot, collecting $30.5 million for a total haul of $187.1 after a good three-week run. Also staying put was Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, with Ben Stiller, which, at No. 4, took home $9.6 million for a cume of $143.4.

At No. 5, Will Ferrell’s Land of the Lost brought in $9.1 million, reaching a total gross of $34.9 million. In the Brad Silberling-directed adventure comedy, Ferrell plays a scientist who travels to a parallel dimension inhabited by bizarre creatures.

J. J. AbramsStar Trek, starring Chris Pine (above) and Zachary Quinto, slipped to seventh place this weekend, picking up $5.6 million for a cumulative gross of $232 million after six weeks in release. Following at No. 8 with $4.6 million was Terminator Salvation, with Christian Bale, which brought its total to $113.8 million.

At the bottom of the top 10, Ron Howard’s Angels & Demons, starring Tom Hanks, pulled in $4.2 million at No. 9 ($123.3 million total gross), while Sam Raimi’s horror flick Drag Me to Hell finished tenth with a weekend gross of $3.8 million and a cume of $35.1 million.
