Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner in The Twilight Saga: New Moon
The Twilight Saga: New Moon, directed by Chris Weitz, and starring Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner, did even better than its studio, Summit Entertainment, had estimated.
According to final box-office figures for the weekend, New Moon earned $142.8 million in the US/Canada market, more than $2 million than predicted yesterday. That's also more than double what Twilight made in its first three days a year ago ($69.6 million) and almost three-quarters of that film's total domestic earnings.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon has had the third biggest opening weekend ever, after Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight ($158.4 million) and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 ($151.1 million).

Thanks to the film's success, this past weekend — with a $258.6 million take — will probably be labeled the second most profitable weekend ever at the box office as per Exhibitor Relations. (Remember, those figures haven't been adjusted for inflation.) Earnings failed to surpass only those of the 2009 July weekend when The Dark Knight opened; the box-office total then was a little above $260 million.
Heath Ledger's unexpected death was credited for the phenomenal interest in that film.
And finally, New Moon reportedly took in another $118.1 million overseas. Its worldwide total currently stands at more than $260 million.

I still say they would have done better if they went with the zombies. They have their core young-girl fans locked down – this would have let guys feel more comfortable seeing it.
