Josh Hartnett in 30 Days of Night

30 Days of Night soared to the top of the North American box office this weekend with an estimated US$16 million.

David Slade’s adaptation of the popular graphic novel stars Josh Hartnett (above, right) as an Alaskan town sheriff who faces his most challenging mission yet when a gang of bloodthirsty vampires invade the community amid 30 days of darkness.

Last week’s champion, Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married?, dropped to No. 2, collecting a solid $12.1 million from ticket sales at 2,034 locations. The film lifted its cumulative gross to $38.9 million after two weeks in release.

Walt Disney’s family comedy The Game Plan slipped to No. 3, earning $8.1 million from 3,301 markets. Directed by Andy Fickman and starring wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, the movie reached a total haul of $69.2 million after a strong four-week run.

At the No. 4 spot, Tony Gilroy’s thriller Michael Clayton snatched $7.1 million this weekend, lifting its cumulative gross to $22 million after three weeks in theaters. The George Clooney vehicle focuses on an attorney who faces his toughest challenge yet when his most important case is sabotaged.

Meanwhile, Ben Affleck’s directorial debut, Gone Baby Gone, ranked in fifth this weekend, taking home $6 million from ticket sales at 1,713 theatres. Based on the acclaimed novel by Dennis Lehane, the movie follows two private detectives on their quest to find a missing girl.

Next weekend, two wide releases will compete for the top spot at the box office.

What would Halloween be without Saw. On Friday, fans of the franchise will be able to gear up for the fourth installment in the popular series, which follows Jigsaw’s cruel games even though he and his apprentice are dead. The horror flick is helmed by Darren Lynn Bousman and produced by James Wan.

Steve Carell, Juliette Binoche in Dan in Real Life

Also opening is Dan in Real Life, a romantic comedy starring Steve Carell and Juliette Binoche. Directed by Peter Hedges, the man behind the acclaimed Pieces of April, the movie focuses on a talented advice columnist whose life takes an unexpected twist when he falls for his brother’s girlfriend.

Limited releases include veteran Sidney Lumet’s latest drama Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, starring Ethan Hawke; Jonathan Demme’s documentary Jimmy Carter: Man from Plains; and Alejandro Gomez Monteverde’s romantic drama Bella.
