TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN Tops Box Office

Transformer: Revenge of the Fallen

Though massacred by critics, Michael Bay’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen crushed the North American box office this week with an impressive $201.2 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Starring Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, and Josh Duhamel, the anticipated sequel to Transformers opened at 4,234 locations Wednesday and scored a daily gross of $60.6 million, the highest ever for a Wednesday. The film brought in another $28 million Thursday and $36.7 million on Friday.

At a distant No. 2, last week’s winner The Proposal collected $18.4 million, reaching a domestic gross of $69 million. Starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, the film follows an overbearing book editor who forces her assistant into marrying her when she faces deportation to Canada.

Following in third place with $17.2 million was Todd Phillips‘ comedy The Hangover, which lifted its cume to a solid $183.2 million after a superb four-week run.

Meanwhile, Pixar’s Up brought in an additional $13 million at No. 4, lifting its total haul to $250.2 million. The animated flick follows a 78-year-old widower who takes his entire house on a trip to South America.

Cameron Diaz, Jason Patric in My Sister's Keeper

New entry My Sister’s Keeper wasn’t all that lucky this weekend. The Nick Cassavetes-directed drama With Cameron Diaz, Abigail Breslin, and Jason Patric, debuted in fifth place with only $12 million from ticket sales at 2,606 locations.

Harold Ramis‘ comedy Year One slipped to No. 6, earning $5.8 million for a domestic total of $32.2 million. Following in seventh place with $5.4 million was Tony Scott’s The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, which brought its cume to $53.4 million after three weeks in release.

At the bottom of the top 10, J. J. AbramsStar Trek, starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, picked up another $3.6 million for a total haul of $246.2 million. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian followed at No. 9 with a weekend gross of $3.5 million and a domestic total of $163.2 million.

Finally, Sam Mendes‘ dramedy Away We Go took home $1.6 million at No. 10. Now playing at 495 locations, the film brought its total gross to $4 million.
