The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the Chris Weitz-directed Twilight sequel starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, earned $72.7 million on its first day out, including a record $26.3 million from midnight screenings, thus breaking the single day domestic box-office record previously held by Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, starring Christian Bale and Heath Ledger, which made $67.2 million on its opening day last year.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL Tops Box Office; THIS IS IT in 2nd Spot
As expected, Walt Disney’s A Christmas Carol took the No. 1 spot at the North American box office this weekend with a solid $31 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Starring Jim Carrey (above), the Robert Zemeckis-directed 3D motion-capture adventure tale based on Charles Dickens’ classic opened at 3,683 locations and scored an average of $8,417 per theater, enough to crush its competition.
At No. 2, Michael Jackson’s This Is It delivered another strong performance, earning $14 million at 3,481 locations. Sony’s documentary about the late pop star’s planned concert series lifted its total gross to an impressive $57.8 million.

Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT Tops Box Office
Sony Pictures’ Michael Jackson documentary This Is It prevailed at the North American box office this weekend, with $21.3 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The Kenny Ortega-directed film opened at 3,481 locations Wednesday, bagging $11.1 million in two days. The domestic total of This Is It currently stands at a solid $32.5 million.
Most of the film’s footage was shot in June 2009 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. It includes scenes drawn from hours of rehearsal and behind-the-scenes footage.
