Sohni Mahiwal / The Legend of Love in Pakistan
by Andre Soares
The BBC reports that Latif Faiziyev and Umesh Mehra’s Sohni Mahiwal / The Legend of Love, a 1984 Indo-Russian co-production based on a folk tale from the Punjab region, has been granted a special exemption from Pakistan’s ban on Bollywood films. According to the Pakistan Film Producers Association, the move did not mean the lifting of the Indian film ban which was put in place in 1965, when the two countries fought the second of their three wars. The ban has been held in place with the support of Pakistani producers who, instead of making films to appeal to the local market, have opted to keep at bay the more exuberant - and more popular - Indian films. (Ban or no ban, those can be easily found in pirated video or DVD copies throughout Pakistan.) Sohni Mahiwal stars Sunny Deol and Poonam Dhillon.
