Hollywood Out of Touch with Communist China’s Values
by Andre Soares
Apparently, Hollywood is out of touch with the People’s Republic of China’s values, too. . .
Via Taiwan News: "In contrast to the joy expressed throughout Taiwan from President Chen Shui-bian to leading media and ordinary citizens, the heart of the reaction in China to [Taiwan-born director Ang] Lee’s [Academy] award was cynical deception.
"State print and broadcast media in the People’s Republic of China declared that Lee’s award was ‘China’s glory’ and churlishly refused to report or dubbed out the director’s expression of gratitude of ‘Thank you, Taiwan!’ to his homeland upon receiving his Oscar.
"As noted in wire service reports, almost all mass-circulation newspapers described Lee as ‘Chinese’ or at most ‘Chinese-American’ and left out entirely the fact that he was born and raised in Taiwan.
…
"Adding irony to insult, the PRC censors have decided not to show Lee’s award-winning film, evidently because of an official homophobia, in stark contrast to the flood of views in Taiwan, where Brokeback Mountain has grossed over US$1 million.
"Through these shameful actions, Beijing’s ruling Chinese Communist Party has displayed their deep fear of Taiwan’s democracy and open society and homosexuality and, last but not least, the power of artistic creation."
