El Baldío in Rio
by Andre Soares

On Jan. 19, at the Museum of Modern Art Cinematheque (site in Portuguese) in Rio de Janeiro, the Sala Escura (Dark Room) Cineclub will screen a curious rarity, the Argentinian political drama El Baldío (1952). Adapted by José Maria Fernández Unsain from Jorge Mar’s novel, and directed by Carlos Rinaldi, El Baldío is the story of two European immigrants who flee war-ravaged Europe for a better life in Argentina, a peaceful country prospering under the aegis of the populist first-couple Juan and Evita Perón. Ironically, it’s Argentinians who are now fleeing for a better future in Europe, though things may turn around once again - as they often do - in the not-too-distant future.
