FANNY AND ALEXANDER and SHORT CUTS on DVD

 

Fanny and Alexander (by Ingmar BergmanThe Criterion Collection has recently released a special five-disc DVD set of Ingmar Bergman’s final feature film, the 1982 classic Fanny och Alexander / Fanny and Alexander.

Fanny and Alexander won a number of awards, including the best foreign-language film Oscar.

This DVD set includes both the three-hour theatrical version and the five-hour version (which Bergman prefers) that was originally shown on Swedish television. Other extras include a “making of” documentary and a 1984 interview with the director for Swedish TV.

Another Criterion release is Robert Altman’s sprawling 1993 Short Cuts, for which Altman received an Academy Award nomination for best director, and which stars Julianne Moore, Lily Tomlin, Jack Lemmon, Robert Downey, Jr., and many others.

Extras include a “making of” documentary and a PBS bio on author Raymond Carver, whose stories were the basis for Short Cuts.
