Beverly Hills, CA — The 1971 Best Picture nominee Fiddler on the Roof will be screened as the next feature in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' "Great To Be Nominated" series. Adapted from the stage musical which was based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem, the film will be shown on Monday, July 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Producer-director Norman Jewison, producer Walter Mirisch, production designer Robert Boyle, editor Antony Gibbs and casting director Lynn Stalmaster will participate in a panel discussion following the screening.

In Fiddler on the Roof, Topol stars as Tevye, a Jewish milkman coping with day-to-day "shtetl" life, Jewish traditions and the women in his life in pre-Revolutionary Russia. The film received a total of eight Academy Award® nominations and took home the Oscars® for Cinematography (Oswald Morris), Music Scoring — Adaptation and original song score (adaptation score by John Williams) and Sound (Gordon K. McCallum, David Hildyard). The film also was nominated for Best Picture (Jewison, producer), Actor (Topol), Actor in a Supporting Role (Leonard Frey as Motel), Art Direction (Boyle, Michael Stringer; Set Decoration: Peter Lamont) and Directing (Jewison).

The Oscar-nominated animated short Evolution (1971) will be shown prior to the feature.

Tickets for Fiddler on the Roof may be purchased at a cost of $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID. Tickets may be purchased by mail, in person at the Academy during regular business hours or, depending on availability, on the night of the screening when the doors open at 6:30 p.m. Curtain time for the feature is 7:30 p.m., and pre-show elements will begin at 7 p.m. The Academy is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
