Gérard Philipe, Danielle Darrieux in LE ROUGE ET LE NOIR
The clip above features Danielle Darrieux and Gérard Philipe in Claude Autant-Lara’s 1954 period drama Le Rouge et le noir / Rouge et Noir, which chronicles the social aspirations and private affairs of a young and handsome priest wannabe (Philipe) in mid-19th century France.
Based on Stendhal’s 1830 novel, Le Rouge et le noir was adapted for the screen by Autant-Lara, and the duo Jean Aurenche and Pierre Bost. Also in the cast: Antonella Lualdi, Jean Mercure, and Jean Martinelli.
And here’s Bosley Crowther in the New York Times: "The French prototype of Pal Joey — Stendhal’s Julien Sorel, the eager and calculating hero of his classic, Le Rouge et le Noir, is made quite a smooth and fetching fellow by graceful Gérard Philipe in Rouge et Noir, the French film version … What’s more, the whole Stendhal panorama of modes and manners in post-Napoleonic France is made most exquisite and intriguing in this uncommonly handsome color film."
