HINDLE WAKES on DVD
by Andre Soares
On April 12, Milestone Films released Maurice Elvey’s well-respected 1927 silent drama Hindle Wakes, based on Stanley Houghton’s oft-filmed play. Set in a Lancashire mill-town, the story revolves around a young woman who refuses to conform to the local mores.
The film stars Estelle Brody, 1930s leading man John Stuart (who reprised his role in the 1931 talkie version), and Norman McKinnel. Cyril McLaglen, brother of Academy Award-winner Victor McLaglen, has a small role.
Victor Saville, one of the most important British directors of the 1930s, was credited for the screenplay of the 1927 version — and went on to direct the 1931 remake. In the 1940s he left England for Hollywood, producing and/or directing a number of movies, including the Rita Hayworth musical Tonight and Every Night (1945) and the Lana Turner blockbuster Green Dolphin Street (1947).
