IN OLD ARIZONA on DVD
by Andre Soares
Warner Baxter won a best actor Academy Award (for the period 1928-1929) for his portrayal of the Cisco Kid, a selfish and vengeful Robin Hood of the Old American West, in Raoul Walsh and Irving Cummings’s In Old Arizona.
Baxter is risible as the bandit who speaks with a Mexican accent thicker — and considerably more painful — than a cactus needle, but it was this old and tired Cisco Kid that catapulted the actor, then a second-rank leading man, to stardom. Edmund Lowe and Dorothy Burgess are the other two sides of a romantic triangle that ends in tragedy.
The creaky In Old Arizona is worth watching partly because of its historical importance — it’s the first outdoor talkie ever made — and partly because of its pre-Production Code sensibility. In fact, "In Racy Arizona" would have been an apt title for this early talkie Western.
