At GreenCine Daily, David Hudson mentions the discovery of long-lost sequences from the 1927 silent science-fiction classic Metropolis:
"For film historians and cinephiles in general, this could easily be the story of the year. The ZEITmagazin has just posted at its site a preview of a piece running in tomorrow’s edition that confirms the existence of the original version of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. ‘The most important silent film in German history,’ they announce, ‘can, from this day forward, be considered rediscovered.’

Hudson goes on to explain that Metropolis, which premiered in Berlin in 1927, lost about one-quarter of its length after Paramount acquired the film for U.S. distribution. The long-lost scenes were found at the Museo del Cine in Buenos Aires. Whether that means that Metropolis will have all its quartiers back in place still remains to be seen.

This is fantastic news for cinema. It’s great when “lost” things are rediscovered.
More like the story of the century. The only thing better would be the mythical 8 hour versions of GREED and THE WEDDING MARCH.
On the one hand “Yay! We may yet get to see the the film the way we were meant to see it.” On the other hand “Marvellous! I’ve had it on Video and two separate DVD’s, and now I’ll have to buy it again”. I hope they don’t just bung it on Blu-Ray ‘cos I can’t afford a Blu-Ray player.
