“A Salute to the National Film Board of Canada” (NFB) will be presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences‘ — in partnership with the Charles Guggenheim Center for the Documentary Film and the Foundation for the National Archives — on Thursday, October 23, at 7 p.m. at the William G. McGowan Theater at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The event will be hosted by animation critic and historian Charles Solomon, following an introduction by Academy President Sid Ganis.

The National Film Board of Canada salute will include a panel discussion with NFB Chair and Government Film Commissioner Tom Perlmutter, NFB animation producer Marcy Page, and Torill Kove, whose The Danish Poet won both the Oscar and the Genie last year.

Bob's BirthdaySeveral National Film Board of Canada films, including Norman McLaren’s classic Neighbours (above, 1952), Ryan Larkin’s Walking (1969), David Fine and Alison Snowden’s Bob’s Birthday (1993), Chris Landreth’s Academy Award-winning Ryan (2004), and the aforementioned The Danish Poet (2006), will be screened.

Tickets for the event are free. Reservations are not required; seating is on a first-come, first served basis. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The National Archives Building is located at 700 Pennsylvania Ave., NW; the entrance for special events is on Constitution Ave. (Metro: Archives/Navy Memorial [yellow, green lines]).
