James Stewart, Cary Grant, and Katharine Hepburn can’t believe their eyes when they see Philadelphia’s Communist Party activists using their unrefined hands to eat the wedding cake.
Ardrossan. the estate of the family that inspired the characters of the 1940 classic The Philadelphia Story, is up for sale. Hope Montgomery Scott was the family head and the basis for Katharine Hepburn’s character in both the movie and its source, Philip Barry’s play.
Directed by George Cukor and adapted by Donald Ogden Stewart, the film version co-starred Cary Grant and James Stewart, with Ruth Hussey, Mary Nash, Virginia Weidler, John Howard, John Halliday, and Henry Daniell providing solid support.
Ardrossan, a 360-acre estate (down from 800 acres in 1909) that includes a 50-room Georgian mansion, was named after the Montgomery ancestral home in Ayrshire, Scotland.
