Academy Rule Changes

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has changed rules regarding the screenings and the promotion of eligible films for next year’s Oscars.
Since the inception of the Academy Awards nearly eighty years ago, charges of influence peddling, unethical campaigning, and outright bribery have been leveled against the studios and Academy members.
In 2003, for instance, Miramax and former Academy president and two-time Oscar-winning director Robert Wise were heavily criticized for an opinion piece in which Wise endorsed fellow director Martin Scorsese for an Oscar for his 2002 historical (semi-)epic Gangs of New York. It was later revealed that the article had been written by publicist Murray Weissman, then working for Miramax’s Oscar campaign.
Perhaps because of the backlash, Gangs of New York failed to win a single award out of its ten nominations.
