Academy Tribute to Arthur Penn

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will pay tribute to the career of three-time Oscar-nominated director Arthur Penn, 83, with a special screening of his 1975 crime drama Night Moves, on Thursday, November 17, in New York City. Penn will be the guest of honor at the tribute, open to Academy members and invited guests, which, as per the Academy’s press release, will feature "a conversation with Penn and will highlight his career through clips and special guests," among
them screenwriter Walter Bernstein, actress Estelle Parsons, and producer Julian Schlossberg.

<p><em>Night Moves</em> stars <strong>Gene Hackman </strong>as world-weary private investigator Harry Moseby, who is hired by a former starlet to find her runaway daughter (played by <strong>Melanie Griffith</strong> in her film debut). Released by Warner Bros., <em>Night Moves </em>was produced by <strong>Robert M. Sherman</strong>, written by <strong>Alan Sharp</strong>, and edited by <strong>Dede Allen</strong>.</p>
<p>During his 55-year career, Arthur Penn directed for the stage, television, and the big screen. His three Academy Award nominations were for <em>The Miracle Worker</em> (1962), the overly melodramatic and highly theatrical retelling of the story of <strong>Anne Sullivan</strong> and <strong>Helen Keller</strong> (which he had previously directed onstage) that brought Oscars to both <strong><a href=)

Award nominees <strong>Warren Beatty</strong>, <strong>Faye Dunaway</strong>, <strong>Gene Hackman</strong>, and <strong>Michael J. Pollard</strong> (the last two in the supporting category), and Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner Estelle Parsons; and <em>Alice’s Restaurant</em> (1969), a meandering, nearly plotless film adaptation of the <strong>Arlo Guthrie</strong> song, with Guthrie himself in the lead.
