Water Lilies by Celine Sciamma

Céline Sciamma, the director of Naissance des pieuvres / Water Lilies, talking to Boyd van Hoeij at european-films.net:

"I wanted to make a film for the biggest possible audience in Europe and perhaps beyond. The film itself reflects that as well, borrowing from two distinct traditions: the US teen movie and French adolescence dramas. The way the narrative is structured and the fact that there are no parents in the film — the teen protagonists seem to live inside their own bubble, really — is very American, while the social aspects of the film and the precision with which its focuses on the feelings and emotions if rather French."

In his review of Water Lilies, the story of three teenage girl swimmers attempting to come to terms with their burgeoning sexuality, van Hoeij calls the growing-pains drama a "highly accomplished feature debut … [that] benefits from an extremely nuanced script, flawless performances from its young leads and great cinematography."
