Wu ji / The Promise (2005) directed by Chen Kaige, starring Hiroyuki Sanada, Jang Dong-Gun, Cecilia Cheung

"China’s greatest film-maker outraged by ’steamed bun’ parody on internet." Via The Independent - "A young, unemployed film-maker’s 20-minute internet parody of Chen Kaige’s latest movie The Promise has delighted China’s online audiences and raised the hackles of the country’s most prestigious - and pompous - film director.

"Hu Ge, 31, a multimedia editor from Shanghai, said he made a parody of Chen’s £24m fantasy epic ‘just for fun’ because he thought the original was ‘boring and unoriginal’."

Wu ji / The Promise was recently shown out of competition at the Berlin Film Festival.

Well, he’s right, The Promise IS pretty damned bad, with the silly plot and cartoonishly horrible special effects. Chen Kaige’s been in a slump since Emperor and the Assassin. Too bad it broke box-office records in China.

That’s too bad. I’m not a Chen Kaige fan, but I was hoping that “The Promise” would be a good film. Oh, well. . .
