Even Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is a sort of buddy-buddy movie, but without a female getting in the way for obvious reasons.

Yes, there's a "certain thematic consistency" in some of Howard Hawks' films. I agree.
However, I just can't tell by looking at "Bringing Up Baby" or "I Was a Male War Bride" or "To Have and Have Not" or "Fig Leaves" or "A Girl in Every Port" or "Rio Bravo" or "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" that they were all directed by the same man.
Unlike, say, the films of Federico Fellini, or Pedro Almodovar, or Ingmar Bergman, or Michelangelo Antonioni, to name a few.

Many of Howard Hawks' films had two men who bonded, and a woman who got in the way. "A Girl in Every Port," "Only Angels Have Wings," and others. I know that doesn't necessarily make him an "auteur," but there's a certain thematic consistency there, wouldn't you say?
