An Evening with Ken Russell in London

Director Ken Russell, the moyen-âgé terrible of the film scene of the late 1960s and 1970s, was honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' this past September 20 at the Curzon Soho in London.

"An Evening with Ken Russell" featured a screening of the director's Women in Love (1970), which brought him his only Academy Award nomination, in addition to a best actress Oscar for Glenda Jackson.

Among Russell's other films are the much underrated 42nd St.-ish The Boy Friend (1971), the much respected Tommy (1975), the much maligned Valentino (1977), and the much weird Salome's Last Dance (1987). The still-active Russell is currently working on one more film version of Moll Flanders.

In the top photo, Russell is sitting next to another 1970s film talent, Nicholas Roeg — he of the disturbing Don't Look Now (1973). Roeg's latest effort, Puffball, his first feature film in more than 10 years, was screened at the 2007 Montreal Film Festival. Puffball stars Kelly Reilly, Miranda Richardson, Rita Tushingham, and Donald Sutherland.
