"For years and years the critics have attacked my films, and for years and years the public has come to my rescue."

That’s French director Claude Lelouch, explaining why he has offered to show his latest film, Les Parisiens, free of charge. Massacred by French critics, Les Parisiens attracted a mere 16,653 ticket-buyers on opening night.

"I advise Lelouch against doing this. [. . .] When a film is a flop, you can’t do much about it."

That’s French director Philippe de Broca, talking from experience. Almost forty years ago, in 1966, he held free screenings of his poorly received fantasy King of Hearts — but to no avail.
