Gianni Amelio’s THE KEYS TO THE HOUSE on DVD
by Andre Soares
One of the most prestigious Italian productions of 2004, Gianni Amelio’s Le Chiavi di casa / The Keys to the House revolves around a thirty-something man (Kim Rossi Stuart) who tries to cope with being a good father to his disabled son (Andrea Rossi). The excellent Charlotte Rampling is also in the cast.
In addition to winning the best director Nastro d’Argento (Silver Ribbon) from the National Union of Italian Film Journalists, Le chiavi di casa was nominated for 7 David di Donatello Awards (Italy’s Oscars), and was that country’s official submission for the best foreign-language film Academy Award. (The film, however, failed to make the cut.)
Gianni Amelio is one of the best film directors in the world today. Among his unsentimental but deeply moving films of the last 15 years are the best foreign-language film Academy Award-nominee prison drama Porte aperte / Open Doors (1990); Il Ladro di bambini / The Stolen Children (1991), a road movie about a carabiniere and two young social outcasts; and Lamerica (1994), an unsparing tale of modern colonialism with a clever final twist.
