KINSEY on DVD

Fundamentalists of all stripes may have been outraged at Bill Condon’s version of Dr. Alfred Kinsey’s life, but Kinsey is really quite tame if compared to the actual life and deeds of the behavioral researcher who helped to spur the sexual revolution of the 1960s.
This cuddlier, somewhat desexualized Kinsey may have made the highly complex researcher more palatable to the film’s backers and to American audiences, but it has also resulted in a much blander film. Liam Neeson gives a capable performance in the title role, even though his teddy-bearish Kinsey is little more than the latest representation of the film cliché about the misunderstood man of science. (See Dr. Ehrlich’s Magic Bullet, Freud, etc.) Timothy Hutton, for his part, quietly steals every scene in which he appears.
