PERFECT CRIME on DVD
by Andre Soares
Crimen ferpecto / Perfect Crime is a pitch-black comedy about our lust for sex, companionship, physical beauty, and social status. Mónica Cervera is superb as the Ugly Duckling who, instead of developing into a gorgeous swan, is transformed into a sex-starved, all-controlling Medusa. Guillermo Toledo may lack the necessary comic touch to make his scenes funny, but he does provide a solid screen presence as the sexual predator-turned-sexual prey.
Álex de la Iglesia directs the bloody, murderous, totally perverted proceedings with a, well, bloody, murderous, and totally perverted flair — which unfortunately works only some of the time. For although Crimen ferpecto offers moments that are funnier than the greatest of screwball comedies — one involving a dinner-table conversation with a sex-obsessed, pathological liar 8-year-old girl is a comic masterpiece — the laughs are noticeably absent whenever Mónica Cervera is not around. Yet, despite its shortcomings, Crimen ferpecto is certainly well worth watching.
