DVD Piracy and the Brazilian President

Dois Filhos de Francisco aka Two Sons of Francisco (2005) directed by Breno Silveira, starring Angelo Antonio, Dira Paes, Márcio Kieling, Thiago MendonçaIf it weren’t enough that his Labor Party is at the core of what may well be the worst corruption scandal in Brazil’s history — and that is saying a lot — Brazilian president Lula (aka Luiz Inácio da Silva) was caught watching a pirated DVD while aboard his private jet during a Moscow-Brasília flight last October.

The film that caused the piracy uproar is Breno Silveira’s 2 Filhos de Francisco / 2 Sons of Francisco, reportedly the most popular Brazilian production since 1990. Based on a true story, 2 Filhos de Francisco tells the rags-to-riches story of sertanejo- a sort of Brazilian country music - singers Zezé and Luciano di Camargo. The film is Brazil’s official submission for the 2006 Best Foreign-Language Film Academy Awards.

Lula expressed his sadness over the incident, stating that he is friends with the two singers.
