Pride & Prejudice on DVD
by Andre Soares
On DVD: Pride & Prejudice, Joe Wright’s workmanlike adaptation of Jane Austen’s romantic novel, is scheduled to be released on DVD on February 28. Among the DVD extras are the featurettes "Jane Austen, Ahead of Her Time" and "HBO First Look: Pride & Prejudice, A Classic in the Making," and Wright’s audio commentary. This latest adaptation has been well received by U.S. critics, and has garnered four Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress for Keira Knightley. (When Knightley’s name was announced at the nominations ceremony, some reporters actually applauded.) The film has also received six nominations from the British Film Academy, including Best British Film, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (Brenda Blethyn), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Deborah Moggach). (Curiously, Knightley failed to win a Best Actress nod in her home country.) The two best performances in the film, Matthew macfadyen’s Darcy and Judi Dench’s Lady Catherine, have been all but ignored by the myriad award-giving critics and academies.
