THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU on DVD

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou by Wes AndersonWes Anderson’s meandering, overlong The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou makes some profound observations about self-indulgent filmmaking (that’s Anderson’s), the art of sleepwalking on camera (most of the cast, especially star Bill Murray), and the cosmic awesomeness of big, elusive sharks that look like overly-decorated Christmas trees.

Ok, so despite its pretensions, The Life Aquatic is merely a B movie about nothing in particular. Yet, it does offer a couple of good performances (Owen Wilson, Bud Cort), Anjelica Huston disguised as Yoko Ono, and some quirky bits of humor taking place in the background. In fact, The Life Aquatic could have been a good wacky comedy — had it been a 20-minute short film.
