VERA DRAKE on DVD
by Andre Soares
Mike Leigh’s Vera Drake tells the story of the nicest, warmest, cuddliest little (fictitious) abortionist on record. Leigh makes the film’s drab 1950s atmosphere seem real, but he overdoes the melodrama to the point that Vera Drake would have been unbearable were it not for Imelda Staunton’s masterful performance as the saintly cleaning lady, wife, and mother who performs illegal abortions on the side.
Staunton was nominated for an Academy Award, and deservedly won numerous accolades in the United States and in Europe. Is her Vera Drake one of the best performances in film history? See it and believe it.
