Biggest 2005 Hits at the Spanish Box Office

War of the Worlds (2005) directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Tim RobbinsAccording to Zinema.com, the biggest 2005 hits at the Spanish box office were: George Lucas’s Revenge of the Sith (€18.6m*); Santiago Segura’s comedy about a fascist cop, Torrente 3: El Protector / Torrente 3: The Protector (€17.5m); Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds (€16.4m); Mike Newell’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (€13.7m); Jay Roach’s Meet the Fockers (€13.5m); Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath’s Madagascar (€13.4m); Tim Story’s Fantastic Four (€12.6m); Doug Liman’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith (€12.5m); Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby (€12.4m); and Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven (€11.8m). Besides Torrente 3, the highest-grossing Spanish films were Fernando León de Aranoa’s prostitution drama Princesas / Princesses (€5.5m), Roberto Santiago’s soccer comedy El penalti más largo del mundo / The Biggest Penalty in the World (€5m), and Alberto Rodríguez’s youth drama 7 vírgenes / 7 Virgins (€4.1m).

Upon reporting in Variety that Torrente 3 had the largest weekend box-office take in Spanish film history, reviewer Jonathan Holland remarked, "the Spanish national psyche requires urgent attention."

Between January 1 and December 11, 2005, Spanish films sold 19,442,669 tickets, a slight increase from the previous year’s number, 19,282,967. Tickets sold for Hollywood films, on the other hand, tumbled from 100,376,160 in 2004 to 70,298,673 this year.
