PATHFINDER Clip

The Norwegian mystical-adventure drama Ofelas / Pathfinder (1987) received a well-deserved Oscar nomination in the best foreign-language film category. (It lost to the equally deserving Babette's Feast.)

Set in northern Scandinavia during the Middle Ages and spoken in a Sami language*, Pathfinder follows a young man (Mikkel Gaup) who attempts to avenge the slaughter of his family by a band of vicious renegades.

Written and directed by Nils Gaup, the film boasts stunning cinematography by Erling Thurmann-Andersen, and haunting music by Kjetil Bjerkestrand, Marius Müller, and Nils-Aslak Valkeapää.

Set in North America, Marcus Nispel's Pathfinder (2007) was inspired by Gaup's film.

* From what I've read, the Sami linguistic group encompasses several languages.
