My Nikifor by Krzysztof Krauze, with Roman Gancarczyk, Krystyna FeldmanKrzysztof Krauze’s Mój Nikifor / My Nikifor won the Golden Hugo for Best Film at the 41st Chicago International Film Festival at Saturday’s (Oct. 15) award ceremony at the Sheraton Hotel & Towers. This Polish drama about a highly prolific folk artist - played by Silver Hugo Best Actor winner Roman Gancarczyk - beat 18 other films in the festival’s international competition. Inka Friedrich and Nadja Uhl (the star of the Academy Award-nominated De Tweeling / Twin Sisters) shared the Silver Hugo Award for Best Actress for their performances as two overheated neighbors in Sommer vorm Balkon / Summer In Berlin.

Cristi Puiu’s Romanian production Moartea domnului Lazarescu / The Death of Mr. Lazarescu won the Silver Hugo Special Jury Prize for "its ensemble portrayal of human frailty in a modern version of descent into Dante’s Inferno."
