AFI FEST 2007 – Friday, Nov. 9

The AFI FEST 2007 is being held at the ArcLight theater complex in Hollywood.
Tribute to Laura Linney at 6:30 p.m. – The tribute will be followed by a screening of The Savages, in which Linney co-stars with Philip Seymour Hoffman. Director-screenwriter Tamara Jenkins‘ comedy-drama revolves around siblings who are brought together after their estranged father falls ill. 113 min.
The Living Wake (US) at 9:15 p.m. – Sol Tryon’s film follows a small-town alcoholic dreamer who is about to move to the Great Beyond. The wake of the title refers to the man’s farewell party. Note: This is a comedy, not a drama. Screenplay by Mike O’Connell, who also stars. 91 min.

Doghead (Spain) at 9:30 p.m. – Santi Amodeo’s quirky directorial touches and cinematographer Alex Catalán’s clever use of lighting makes Doghead a visually gratifying experience. As a plus, Juan José Ballesta is excellent as the young man with a fragile brain. What prevents Doghead from being as satisfying as it could have been is the lack of cohesion in Amodeo’s screenplay. But despite its flaws, Doghead is a must-see if only for Ballesta’s carefully nuanced performance. In Spanish with English subtitles. 91 min.
