The Moroccan Times reports that seven Moroccan shorts and three features will be screened at this year’s edition of the Cannes Film Festival. The three features are: Mohamed Abderrahman Tazi’s Badis, Jilali Ferhati’s Mémoire en detention, and Yasmina Kassari’s L’Enfant endormi.

Lisa Bryant reports in the Voice of America that "Asia is surging ahead as a power to be reckoned with in the film industry." Bryant uses the five Asian directors in competition for this year’s Palme d’Or at Cannes as an example of Asia’s cinematic might.

Mike Collett-White reports in Reuters that "war, murder and suicide were the themes at the Cannes Film Festival" on opening day. The 1980s war between Iran and Iraq forms the background of Hiner Saleem’s Kilometer Zero, while Dominik Moll’s Lemming begins as a comedy of sorts — a Scandinavian lemming gets stuck in the drain below a kitchen sink in France — but takes a radical (and dark) turn as it progresses. Lemming stars Charlotte Rampling.
