My Brother Is an Only Child by Daniele Luchetti

Via Boyd van Hoeij’s european-films.net:

Daniele Luchetti"The Italian Un certain regard title and local boxoffice hit Mio fratello è figlio unico (My Brother is An Only Child) is a fun panoramic snapshot of politically engaged Italian youngsters in the 1960s and 70s that is not only a portrait of its time but also, be it in diluted form, of the Italian youth of today. The fact that the film is also surprisingly funny, good-looking and showcases the talents of rising star Elio Germano (N - Io e Napoleone) should help it outside of Italy as well, though it is not as all-encompassing and engrossing as local recent-history melodramas La meglio gioventù (The Best of Youth) and Romanzo Criminale (Crime Novel), which were also written by the tandem Sandro Petraglia-Stefano Rulli."

Mio fratello è figlio unico was directed by Daniele Luchetti (right). The story is based on Antonio Pennacchi’s semi-autobiographical bestselling novel Il fasciocomunista (The Fascist-Communist). In addition to Elio Germano, the film stars Riccardo Scamarcio, Angela Finocchiaro, and Luca Zingaretti.

At european-films.net, the hard-at-work heer van Hoeij also offers reviews of several other European films screened at Cannes, including Catherine Breillat’s Une vieille maîtresse / An Old Mistress, Fatih Akin’s Auf der anderen Seite / The Edge of Heaven, and Roy Andersson’s Du levande / You, the Living.
