El violín / The Violin by Francisco Vargas Quevedo, with Don Angel Tavira, Dagoberto Gama,A Mexican production and a Mexican-Bolivian co-production were the two top winners at the 32nd Huelva Ibero-American Film Festival, which came to a close at a ceremony in the town of Huelva in southwestern Spain on Nov. 25.

Francisco Vargas Quevedo’s feature-film debut, El violín / The Violin, won the Colón de Oro for Best Feature, a prize worth €60,000. El violín is the story of an aging traveling musician (Don Angel Tavira) who gets caught up in a peasant revolt. The film also won the Cinematography Award for Martín Boege Paré.

American visa (2006) by Juan Carlos Valdivia, with Kate del Castillo, Demian BichirThe Mexican-Bolivian American visa won the Best Actress Silver Colón for Kate del Castillo, plus three Best Film awards in the festival’s parallel section. Directed by Juan Carlos Valdivia, American visa follows a Bolivian professor who, after being denied a U. S. visa, gets involved in assorted criminal activities. The film is Bolivia’s submission for the 2006 Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award.
