John Cameron Mitchell’s Shortbus
by Andre Soares

Via Reuters: "This film was not pornographic," U.S. director John Cameron Mitchell told reporters at the Cannes Film Festival. "I don’t think anyone got a hard-on watching this film." The film in question is Mitchell’s sexually explicit Shortbus, which has been shown out of competition at the festival.
Hmm… what if someone did get a hard-on watching Shortbus? Would that have made Mitchell’s film, mostly set in a New York cabaret/night-club called Shortbus, any less worthwhile? (Reuters’ Mike Collett-White calls Shortbus a "touching exploration of New York today.")
By the way, Mitchell’s previous film was the quirky and generally well-received Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

More worthwhile. It would make the film more worthwhile.
Just saw SHORTBUS at an OUTFEST sneak preview in LA! John Cameron Mitchell did it again!
Thank you, Mr Mitchell for another incredible movie! An amazing roller coaster ride of emotions. I can not imagine anyone else doing this movie, showing the sex scenes of all types, and have it come out so well! I laughed and cried! One scene sent chills through me, and I started to shake for a moment(won’t say which) Loved every second of this movie!
I’m looking forward to “Shortbus.” Saw the (heavily censored) trailer a couple of nights ago.
By the way, “Shortbus” opens this Friday, Oct. 6, in Los Angeles.
Shortbus is a marvelous films. Poignant, funny, intelligent, profound.
