Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2006Among the films in the official competition at the 41st Karlovy Vary Film Festival, which kicked off on June 30, are Miguel Pereira’s El Destino / Destiny (Argentina / Spain, above left), the tale of a man disguised as a priest who seeks refuge in a village in the middle of nowhere (the no man’s land in question is the border between Bolivia and Argentina); Aku Louhimies’s Valkoinen Kaupunki / Frozen City (Finland, above right), about a Helsinki taxi driver (Janne Virtanen) who loses his wife, his job, and his Mezcal (2005) directed by Ignacio Ortiz Cruz, starring Ana Graham, Dagoberto Gama, Ricardo Blumewits; Ignacio Ortíz’s Ariel Award winner Mezcal (Mexico), an unusual take on the art of storytelling; and Joachim Trier’s Reprise (Norway), the story of two writer wannabes.

The festival runs until July 8.
