MALTA TV INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL 2009: Call for Entries
PRESS RELEASE
From April, TVM, the national public broadcasting station, will be broadcasting for the first time in Malta and also in Europe, a short film festival from around the world which will not only show films but be judged by a professional jury and also by public vote. The short film medium today are not only a stepping stone to full feature films but a genre it its own right. Although producing a short film might reduce the technical, financial and human resources required to produce the film, but on the other hand, the creativity, room for experimentation and artistic risk is more often than not heightened. Moreover, specific skills in scriptwriting, filming and editing are required to produce a short film.
In most film festivals, submissions are evaluated from judges only, are shown to a limited audience and the prizes are awarded. As a result, most producers, directors and writers crave for larger audiences to view their films, criticize and appreciate their work. This festival aims to address this lacuna in the festival system which has become a staple cultural event in most cities around the world.
The producers of this festival, film director and international film festival judge Tony Parnis and television and radio presenter and producer Joyce Grech wanted to offer this platform to new and established film makers. The entries submitted will be adjudicated by a professional team of jurors and by the public who cast their votes via telephone, sms and the internet. The festival will span over twelve programmes where a number of films will be competing in each programme, and the last programme which will be shot at the Empire Cinemas in Bugibba will be adjudicated by the local jury, a foreign jury and a live audience.
The local jury will be composed of three judges, namely, Prof Saviour Chircop, Director of the Communications course at the University of Malta, Mr. Tony Cassar Darien, arts’ commentator with a career in arts’ management and Sunday Times’ commentator and Mr. Winston Azzopardi, leading film production manager who was also appointed as the first ever Film Commissioner for Malta. The fourth member of the jury will be a guest judge who will be changing from one programme to the next.
The submissions will be in English or subtitled in English, so that these films can be fully appreciated by a wide audience. For this purpose, the whole programme, although originally filmed in Maltese will be subtitled in English.
The Malta International TV Short Film Festival will be broadcast on TVM and streamed on www.maltashortfilmfest.com every Thursday from April 2009 from 10pm to 11pm. The programme will be presented by Joyce Grech and produced for TVM by Joyce Grech and Tony Parnis. Jeannot Kuenzel is the creative director and Saviour Baldacchino is managing the IT team. The technical direction will be conducted by Justin Camilleri.
The closing date for submissions is the 14th of February. For further information, please contact Joyce Grech on mobile number 00356 9425594 or Mr Tony Parnis on mobile number 00356 99453982. Our electronic address is info@maltashortfilmfest.com and postal address :
