New Paths for Italian Cinema at Viareggio
by Andre Soares
"After the vote of 9/10 April, even Italian cinema will get going again, after being strongly penalized, both financially and legislatively, by the Berlusconi government and its Culture Ministers." Journalist-screenwriter-producer Felice Laudadio, founder and artistic director of the EuropaCinema festival.
The future of Italian cinema - following Romano Prodi’s narrow victory in Italy’s recently held parliamentary elections - will be the theme of the convention that will close the 23rd edition of EuropaCinema, which will take place in Viareggio, Tuscany, between April 20-25. (Note: An irate Silvio Berlusconi has called the elections "fraudulent," but he has since calmed down a bit.)
By the way, EuropaCinema will present a 15-film retrospective honoring actress (and Viareggio native) Stefania Sandrelli, 59 - she of Bernardo Bertolucci’s Il Conformista / The Conformist and Pietro Germi’s Sedotta e abbandonata / Seduced and Abandoned. Both films are part of the festival’s schedule. Sandrelli will be present on April 20.
