Portland Film Festival 2007
by Andre Soares

In Rang De Basanti, Indian students come to the realization that it’s unpatriotic to cover their buffed-up physiques.
The 30th Portland International Film Festival, which began on Feb. 9, continues until Feb. 25.
Among the scheduled films are Rachid Bouchareb’s highly sentimental war drama Indigènes / Days of Glory, nominated for a best film César and for a best foreign language film Oscar; Cinema, Aspirina e Urubus / Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures, Marcelo Gomes’s touching tale of an unlikely friendship that develops in the arid Brazilian northeast; Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s politically charged, controversial musical (!) Rang De Basanti (according to the festival’s website, the title means, "Bringing out the Color [of Patriotism]"); and Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s much admired Turkish drama Iklimer / Climates, winner of the Critic’s Prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.
