2006 Pusan International Film Festival: October 12-20, 2006

 

Love Conquers All by Chui Mui Tan
Heng Yang's Betelut (China) and Chui Mui Tan's Love Conquers All (Malaysia, see above photo) tied for the New Currents Award for Best New Asian Film at the 2006 Pusan Film Festival. Chui's film also won the FIPRESCI (International Critics) Award.

 

New Currents Award for the Best New Asian Filmmaker of the Year (tie):

Betelut by Heng Yang (China)

"This film is selected for its new cinematic value, great acting from all the cast, powerful picture and beautiful silent moments."

and

Love Conquers All by Chui Mui Tan (Malaysia)

" This film is using a known cinematic language in a nice way telling the life of a village girl who is going to a big city to work and face the reality and the morality of our time."

FIPRESCI (International Critics) Award for an Asian film in the New Currents Sidebar:

Love Conquers All by Tan Chui Mui (Malaysia)

"For its audacious narrative structure and its intelligent work with sound and image."

NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) Award for the Best Korean Film:

The Last Dining Table by Roh Gyeong Tae (Korea)

" For its unique and striking style, its humane portrayal of lower-class families living in isolation from society, and the controlled performances by the lead actors."

KNN Audience Award:

The White Silk Dress by Huynh Luu (Vietnam)

Sunje Fund for Best Korean Documentary in the Wide Angle Sidebar (tie):

The Wind Stirs by Lee Jin-woo (Korea)

and

Portfolio by Yoon Seoungho (Korea)

Special Mention: Merry Christmas by Choi Young-Jun

Woonpa Fund for the Best Korean Documentary Film or Video from the Wide Angle Sidebar (tie):

People Crossing the River by Kim Duk-Chul

and

Our School by Kim Myeong Joon

Special Mention: 16 Takes of Korean Society
