Pusan International Film Festival 2006 Winners
by Andre Soares

I’ve added the list of winners at this year’s Pusan International Film Festival, perhaps the world’s most important showcase for East Asian cinema.
The festival’s top winners were Heng Yang’s Betelut (China) and Chui Mui Tan’s Love Conquers All (Malaysia, see above photo), which tied for the New Currents Award for Best New Asian Film. Chui’s film also won the FIPRESCI (International Critics) Award.
Betelut was chosen for "its new cinematic value, great acting from all the cast, powerful picture and beautiful silent moments," and Love Conquers All because it uses "a known cinematic language in a nice way telling the life of a village girl who is going to a big city to work and face the reality and the morality of our time."
The winners were announced on Oct. 10.
