SUBMISSION Screening Canceled at Rotterdam Film Festival
by Andre Soares
Due to security fears, this year’s Rotterdam Film Festival has canceled the showing of murdered Dutch director Theo van Gogh’s controversial ten-minute film Submission Part One, the story of a Muslim woman who is forced into an arranged marriage, and is then beaten by her husband, raped by her uncle, and finally accused of adultery. Submission had been shown on Dutch television, and it is believed to have been the cause of Van Gogh’s death at the hands of a Muslim fanatic.
Submission was one of three van Gogh films to be shown as part of a freedom of expression event.
