Egghead Filmmaking
April 9th, 2006 by Andre Soares
“Made by eggheads for eggheads . . It is, however, the handling of time which is so completely baffling. He moves from the present to the past and future and back again at a speed which would put an astronaut to shame.” An anonymous reviewer writing for the McCarthy agency of London, discussing Alain Resnais’s L’Année dernière à Marienbad / Last Year at Marienbad.
Dalya Alberge’s [London] Times article about the reviews for the McCarthy agency - which for decades suggested which movies should be shown to the British public - is well worth a look. The aforementioned reviewer also disses the (so-so) crime thriller Brighton Rock, Orson Welles’s Citizen Kane and, gasp, Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
