Shepherd of the Night Flock, George G. Stoney

Filmmaker George G. Stoney, 90, will present and discuss his newly restored 1978 documentary Shepherd of the Night Flock on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at 6:00 p.m. at the Donnell Media Center in New York City. The program will be hosted by Joe Yranski.

The Shepherd of the Night Flock synopsis and mini Stoney biography below are from the press release:

SHEPHERD OF THE NIGHT FLOCK (1978, 59 minutes) Focuses on John Garcia Gensel, the radical pastor of St Peter’s Lutheran Church at 53rd Street and Lexington Avenue, Manhattan. The congregation was revitalized during his tenure during the 1960’s and 1970’s with his innovative religious services where jazz musicians performed, including Duke Ellington. The film captures many of the jazzmen whose career Gensel took an active interest in. In addition the work documents the sale of the church and its land to Citibank, who included a new home for the church in their then new mammoth structure. The film was recently preserved by the Donnell Media Center with a generous grant from the New York State Discretionary Program for Conservation and Preservation of Library Research Materials.

George G. Stoney is a writer, director, and producer of over fifty documentaries and television series, including the award winning ALL MY BABIES (1953); HOW THE MYTH WAS MADE (1978), SOUTHERN VOICES (1985), HOW ONE PAINTER SEES (1988), IMAGES OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION (1990), and THE UPRISING OF ‘34 (1995). He has taught film at the University of Southern California, City College, Stanford University and New York University. He is a founding board member for The Alliance for Community Media, executive producer for the Challenge for Chance at the National Film Board of Canada, National Federation of Local Cable Programmers, and the New York Film And Video Council. The recipient of many awards including Manhattan Borough President’s Award, the Leo Dratfield Award and the New York University Great Teacher Award. Mr. Stoney has been an indomitable force in the American independent film and video field for over sixty years. But it is as a mentor and inspiration for generations of aspiring filmmakers, and his commitment to illuminate social issues and humanitarian concerns, that is perhaps his greatest legacy.

This George G. Stoney program was made possible by funding from the New York State Council on the Arts.
