Keith - this is quite a long time after you wrote the post, but I hope you'll respond.

--> "with only a few tiny oversights" <--

Really? I mean it - I'm not trolling here. Here are the two main oversights that are really not tiny.

(1) The idea that the cop could have arrested Emily Mortimer for "attempted murder" - that's just idiotic. First, as a cop he left a loaded gun out on a countertop - you think he's not getting in trouble if he reports that? YOu think he doesn't risk a suspension? Second, it was obvious to everyone - including Ejiofor's character, who was not about to lie under oath about it - that she was not trying to kill the cop - that she picked up the gun because she was panicked, and it went off, scaring her as much as everyone else. Third, she's a recent rape victim, which makes her hugely sympathetic and gives her panic a reason, making it likely that she wouldn't be prosecuted, and if prosecuted wouldn't be convicted. This whole plot point falls apart entirely.

(2) When the cop commits suicide, the blackmail threat against Mortimer and Ejiofor - that they'll be charged with bribery and attempted murder and whatever - evaporates. You can't prosecute them if the main prosecution witness is dead. So the premise of the latter half of the movie - that Ejiofor must fight because there's no alternative - is ridiculous and empty. Mortimer would certainly know this.

So I'm not sure why you think the plot was so tight. Thanks.
