I was so gratified to learn, about seven years after the release of SM, that it was in fact Allen's personal favorite from an interview in Rolling Stone, if memory serves. To add a couple of observations - with all of its depth and brilliance, every time I watch it I'm reminded of the irony of the fact that with all the references to his "early, funny movies", SM may have the best genuine laughs of them all ("my mother was too busy putting the chicken through the de-flavorizing machine to think about killing herself") and, most importantly, despite comments like Ebert's and others, I find myself more moved by the ending of SM than not only any other Allen film but any other film, period.
Thank you.

Thank you Dan.<br

Good to know that someone appreciated it as much as I did.

Thanks. I saw this movie when it came out and loved it; but have only read bad reviews. Thanks for the comment, Christopher. BTW, the above link is to a new page I added to my Cinemension subsite. I'll be adding a few films some readers have mentioned and I'd forgotten, so it'll grow slowly, but such lists are always good argument inducers.

<a

It pains me truly, that most people are so utterly nescient when it comes to great art. Your essays and reviews, whether they praise or damn their subjects, are ever such beauteous unravelings. Thank You.

I can only agree with every letter of this review. It pains me truly, that most people are so utterly nescient when it comes to great art.
