Young People Fucking by Martin Gero

Young People Fucking by Martin GeroDirected by Martin Gero and written by Gero and Aaron Abrams, Young People Fucking is a film about, you guessed it, young adults engaging in sexual intercourse, the situations surrounding the acts, and the lives of the participants. The situations are: The Friends, The Couple, The First Date, The Roommates, and The Exes. The sexual acts involved are Prelude, Foreplay, Sex, Interlude, Orgasm, and Afterglow.

The ballsy title alone draws one's attention to this romantic comedy, while the quality of the script should keep viewers' interest throughout the film. One of the things Young People Fucking has going for it is that the filmmakers are not afraid to be provocative or daring when it comes to sexual material, mixing comedy, sensuality, relationship issues, and genuine feelings in a cauldron that is bound to touch viewers' funny bones or heart strings. For the majority, Young People Fucking will probably touch both.

What makes Martin Gero's romantic comedy stand out, besides the copious nudity and semi-nudity, is the true-to-lifeness of the various situations. Among those, no Young People Fucking situation is truer than The Exes. What begins as a casual night out to dinner — with sex as dessert — between two old flames, Mia (Sonja Bennett) and Eric (Josh Cooke), quickly turns into something unexpected. That something is that they still care for each other deeply, and throughout their encounter remnants of those feelings are dragged kicking and screaming to the surface. That brings up another important point in Young People Fucking: great acting. The actors are serious when they need to be, elsewhere they are funny — and they are always sincere.

The Friends is another segment that bleeds authenticity, and one that provides Young People Fucking with some of its funniest moments. Considering the film's title, it's obvious that something sexual will happen between the "friends," Matt (co-screenwriter Aaron Abrams) and Kristen (Carly Pope), who have been lifelong buddies. When sex is thrown into the mix, hilarity ensues.

The two segments that are the biggest surprise in terms of what they evolve into are The Couple and The Roommates. There is a section in The Couple in which most males will think to themselves: "What the Fuck! Are you serious? Get the fuck outta here." Within the constraints of Young People Fucking, the story's happenstance isn't out of place and it has the benefit of surprising the viewer. Whether it's an "endurable" surprise or not depends upon the sexual orientation and open-mindedness of said viewer. I will say this much: Andrew (Josh Dean) really loves his wife, Abby (Kristin Booth).

Ennis Esmer, Peter Oldring, Natalie Lisinska in Young People FuckingThe Roommates was more of a fantasy-type scene in that what occurs during the segment is the stuff of some men's fantasies. One roommate, Gord (Ennis Esmer), asks the other, Dave (Peter Oldring), to have sex with his girlfriend, Inez (Natalie Lisinska). I'm not spoiling anything for you. The question is asked right at the beginning of the film.

And let's not forget what The First Date contributes to Young People Fucking: a game, a player, and naivety. The player who brings the game is Ken (Callum Blue), while the naivety belongs to Jamie (Diora Baird). What's great about this sequence is that the unexpected happens, stunting the personal growth of one character while the other's sexual needs go unfulfilled. The old adage is very true of this segment: Never judge a book by its cover.

Young People Fucking is a very funny film that pulls no punches when it comes to dialogue rawness or onscreen nudity. As a plus, the film never sags and is considerably more incisive than many others that have touched on the same subject material.
